Laing Art Gallery & Museum, Newcastle
An exhibition of diverse works by artists who have been brought together over the past year via the kinship of Drop City, a collective-gallery established in Newcastle in 2014 and from 2016 concurrently in Düsseldorf, with a central objective of strengthening links between local and international art networks. Drop City aims to foster a supportive system of relationships and awareness of collaboration, developing a programme by way of international cooperations and exchange of ideas.
Between November 2014 — October 2015 Drop City, Newcastle presented 8 exhibitions in our gallery at 20 South Street. Since it is Drop City’s ambition to work with artists who are at various stages of their careers and whose practices have a particular reference to Drop City and its founder’s motivations, the gallery space allowed for an intense and complex relationship to develop between artists and audiences during our first year.
As our location at 20 South Street closed for re-development, we are excited to take this opportunity to explore more ways to work in the city, carrying on the format of a commercial gallery – representing and supporting our artists work on the international stage – whilst opening up a more dynamic potential for our activity and engagement with the city.
Drop City Centre presents painting, photography, design, furniture, objects, sculpture and installation, as well as event-based live performance and film by artists including Christian Jendreiko, Eleanor Wright, Francesco Pedraglio, hobbypopMUSEUM, Katie Schwab, Markus Karstiess, Nadia Hebson, Paul Becker, Ralf Brög, Sam Watson, and Sophie Macpherson.
